"The first aim of the prepared environment is, as far as is possible, to render the growing child independent of the adult.  That is, it is a place where he can do things for himself - live his own life - without the immediate help of adults.

E.M. Standing, Maria Montessori, Her Life and Work

The prepared environment is where the child begins his path towards independence and growth.  It is the responsibility of the adult to prepare and maintain the environment in such a way that it is orderly, beautiful, functional and safe.  It is then up to the child to construct himself from this prepared environment.

One of the goals for establishing the environment is that the children are happy and content within.

Together we will work to culturally address both the physical qualities (the space, lighting, temperature, furnishings, acoustics, materials and safety) along with the human qualities of the environment (the attitude of the adults, movement and language patterns, routine and general emotional atmosphere.)

We will also work together to purchase or make/create materials for the environment.
